Recently, Heidi J. Ellsworth hosted Tremco’s sales operations and training leadership Patrick Evans, Bob Moretti and Vince Paladino for an episode of Roofing Road Trips®. The topic of conversation for the episode was how contractors can build a stronger relationship with manufacturers and improve their businesses by becoming certified.
In the roofing industry, there are a wide variety of certifications available to contractors. Many different associations have their own general certification programs and a lot of manufacturers also certify contractors specifically in relation to their products. Vince explained a bit of why these certifications matter, saying, “Every manufacturer has a process they want the contractor to adhere to based on a standard quality. To reach that, the contractor needs to understand what the expectations and processes are with the product.” This can be everything from how the manufacturer has designed the product to be installed to what other products are expected to be used in conjunction with the product (think a primer with a coating).
By going through the process of certification, the contractor can learn these expectations and practices and create a better result for them, their clients and the manufacturer. Patrick elaborated, “At the end of the day we are trying to deliver roofing peace of mind to customers and end users. We want to give them a leak-free building and we do that by working with our roofing contractor as partners... We're going to provide training and skill assessments with our products to help you meet your customer's needs.”
Bob, who works in the field helping contractors learn through Tremco, shared a bit of how to get started on the path to certification, saying, “It's all about that team. Generally speaking, the process starts by contractors reaching out to someone on their Tremco local team because they’re interested in getting more training for a type of work. Then we go to our technical department and send out support at the local level so if there is ever an issue at a job site or some kind of challenge the contractors not having to wait for somebody to come fly out to the job site.” From there, the Tremco technician helps the local contractor get the training their team needs and then audits them to officially give them a certification.
