In a recent MetalCast episode, host Heidi J. Ellsworth caught up with John Sheridan of Sheridan Metal Resources, an expert with over 40 years of experience in roofing, to talk about the importance of comprehensive training for contractors installing various metal roofing systems.
John, who started in commercial roofing and later shifted his focus to training, highlighted the gap in the industry when it comes to education. He mentioned that while some manufacturers offer basic warranty compliance training, there's a need for in-depth, adaptable instruction. "It's going to be a laid-back atmosphere, we'll have tools there, we'll have a bunch of different systems from several different manufacturers," John said, underscoring the significance of mentorship and continued support, even years after the training is completed.
The upcoming 2023 METALCON event offers an excellent avenue for hands-on training. John is going to be spearheading the training zone at the conference. He aims to create a space where attendees can engage in practical exercises, including mock installations and interact with manufacturers' representatives from Vicwest, Drexel Metals and McElroy Metal. The training area will be geared towards not only introducing various roofing systems but also helping contractors diversify their skill sets to take on the most complex projects efficiently.
John also stressed the need for companies to continue enhancing their workforce skills to stay competitive. "If you don't continue to expand and grow and increase the skill set of your people, you don't grow as a company. And metal is a big part of that," he added.
For those unable to attend, online resources and future video training materials are in the pipeline to extend the training's reach. As the demand for metal roofing continues to grow, so does the need for skilled contractors. Whether you're an industry veteran or a newcomer, tapping into these valuable training resources can make all the difference in delivering top-notch installations.
