Editor’s note: The following consists of a conversation between MCS’ Gina Cali and Sheridan Metal Resources LLC Owner John Sheridan.
Gina Cali: Why is metal a great subtrade?
John Sheridan: So my first point is if there's been a huge increase over the last few decades in the availability of different metal roof systems and the tools and equipment required to install those systems. So while metal roofing used to be a specialized field for a limited number of contractors, now with the access to the various systems, huge increase in tools and equipment, and the available training, it's put within reach of a lot more contractors. So it's a very attractive subtrade if you already have a roofing company and you want to move into the metal part of the business to expand your offerings as a roofing company.
Second, as the country tries to move towards a more sustainable future, a product with the life cycle advantages of metal and the recyclability of metal becomes more attractive. So you get a lower carbon footprint, you get a longer life span roofing material, you get all the advantages of recyclability with that.
And my third point on that is that, again, as the country moves towards a greener future, a metal roof doesn't need any modification to support a solar panel system. So you don't have to tear off a shingle roof, put a metal roof on as a base. You're already set up. If you do a metal roof now, even if you do a solar system 20 years from now when the tax credits become more readily available, then you're all set up and ready to go.
