Being safe has to be wanted and lived by each individual. When all individuals embrace the simplicity, and complexity, of being safe, it becomes a culture.
As the president, I am replying with leverage of the culture of safety within the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA). I shared the April question with past president Jennifer Heimburger (www.heimburgerconstruction.com), who shared these thoughts:
“Incorporate safety into training and daily activities so it becomes a routine instead of something you do when bad things happen. Become AC478 accredited. Let your people take turns filling out jsa's and do a drawing at the end of the year for a good prize for the people who fill them out."
I also brought this up to David Leinbach (kaisermartingroup.com), my present vice president. Here is what he thought:
“Every employee participates in a bonus program that is “project” specific. It is based on beating budget, timely completion, quality of work (no call-backs) and safety. So safety becomes part of the culture and employees are engaged with each other.”
Therein the most effective ways to improve safety, is to continually improve on the ways we individually, and as a team look at reinforcing the desire to have each of us go home the same, if not better, at the end of each working day.
