Design considerations

Designing with horizontal metal panels requires careful consideration of styles, finishes, installation techniques and compatibility with other materials.

Several of our most popular panel styles are used in both vertical and horizontal applications due to their distinct appearance. With a 1 ½” deep box-style rib, our Mega-Rib panels offer a bold, clean look. In contrast, our Wave panel is concealed fastened and, at only ⅞” deep, offers a less pronounced look. For yet another different look, projects with a retro flair often select corrugated products like our Multi-Cor.

Color and finish options offer even more customization opportunities; current trends favor woodgrain patterns and metallic finishes. However, as the photos above demonstrate, even in an earthtone color family or bare metallic finish, horizontal metal panels can make quite a statement.

Builders should follow proper installation techniques. Horizontal panels require a specific sequence, usually starting from the bottom and working up, to prevent water seepage. Additionally, when attaching panels to open framing, vertical wall framing is necessary to provide stable support. And it’s important to realize panels over 40-50 feet may need butt joint details or require continuous framing for optimal support.

Challenges and solutions

Using horizontal metal panels in construction presents unique challenges, but these can be effectively managed with the right practices and techniques. One critical consideration is addressing trim conditions — particularly at inside and outside corners.

Some manufacturers offer a special flashing called a mitered corner for horizontal applications. As the name implies, a mitered corner piece matches the siding profile and is intended to make the two wall panels blend seamlessly into each other. The first image below shows a mitered corner condition, whereas the second image shows the more common flat corner trim.

When deciding between mitered and flat trim for horizontal siding projects, it’s important to consider cost and installation implications. Mitered corners are typically manufactured by hand, which increases the cost significantly. Additionally, mitered corners require the panels to line up exactly at the intersection of the two wall planes. Inexperienced contractors and buildings built out of square can be especially challenging for mitered corner conditions.

Longer wall applications also require additional attention. Some panel styles, like our Wave and FW models, aren’t suitable for endlaps. Panels exceeding 40-50 feet require custom butt joint details, which can interrupt the desired optical effect.
