Sustaining success

MCS Sustaining Success
May 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m.

By Emma Peterson.

Finding your own path of innovation and integrity is key to creating a business that can survive the competitive market.

Sustainability is a term that is often only thought of in terms of environmental responsibility, but it can also refer to creating a business that can last the test of time and adversity. In this MetalCast™ episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth hosted Bobby Mesner to talk about how to set your business up for sustainable success. Bobby is one of our trusted MCS Influencers and has been in this industry for over two decades.

His story started as a contractor, as he explained, “We started RMG Erectors & Constructors back 23 years ago as an actual general contractor, and kind of just moved into the metal building world over the course of time.” From there, Bobby and RMG have grown exponentially. He described some of their other endeavors, “We have moved into RMG Luxury Services, which is our luxury brand where we offer black car service to customers in the commercial business side of things. We own our own private jet, so we have our own aviation business, and we're looking to expand that business into jet rental.”

The key to their incredible journey? Making their own path. Bobby advised, “If you love what you do and you know what you do and you know how to do it well, find a way to do it differently. People are going to admire that of you and they're going to come back to you, and you're going to rise to the top organically.” You might get pushback for challenging the standards, but Bobby pointed out, “If you want to be sustainable in anything, you have got to deal with integrity. You have to be honest.”

Building trust with customers and ensuring you will always give them the accurate truth means that they will become more accustomed to and supportive of any new ideas you bring to the table. This means not only acknowledging the wins, but also the challenges you encounter along the way. Bobby said he tells all his employees, “The only way you learn is by making mistakes. If you're not making mistakes, you're not growing in any capacity.”
