Manufacturers that use raw materials with recycled content are really going to contribute to a sustainable project. This gives the contractor a great opportunity to talk to 3-4 potential metal manufacturers and ask questions such as: What percentage of your material contains recycled content? What are you doing in-house to lower your manufacturing process carbon footprint? Is your product easily recyclable when the project is decommissioned?
Also contractors need to consider whether or not a potential metal manufacturer has all in-house processes versus delegated or 3rd party portions of their process. Those that have everything in-house have a more sustainable process over others that use third parties to complete portions of their process. Using third parties requires additional shipping between multiple facilities before the finished product is then sent to the jobsite.
Having those answers in hand when talking to an owner will ensure all interested parties are getting the most sustainable product for the project.
