On a recent episode of MetalCast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with guest Tom Stortz of John Stortz & Son, a fifth-generation family business specializing in roofing tools. They delved into the nuances of slate and metal roofing, emphasizing the importance of high-quality tools and skilled contractors.
You probably know about slate and metal products but here are some important differences you might want to remember. Slate is a natural stone material that offers a unique aesthetic and durability. Metal, on the other hand, is made of materials like aluminum, copper or steel and is known for its energy efficiency and longevity.
But with both materials, craftsmanship and choosing the right tools for the job matter. “There are a lot of similarities between the slate roofers and the sheet metal workers,” Tom said. “They're the types of trades that require a certain skillset that you don't get with your common roofer.”
The industry relies on a variety of tools that are designed for specific tasks. For slate roofing, tools like slate rippers, cutters and hammers are essential. Metal roofing requires seamers, snips and hand crimpers, among others. Tom noted, "It takes years and years to build your toolbox so that you have the proper tools."
John Stortz & Son have long been committed to manufacturing and distributing these specialized tools. Tom stressed, "Our customers are looking for better quality tools to do better work... products that are going to last longer and they're what professionals are using for the trade."
Afterall, quality is not just about the end result, it's a matter of reputation in a business where word of mouth carries a lot of weight. Whether it's demonstrations at trade shows or exchanging tips online, staying updated on the latest tools and techniques is crucial for any contractor.
