Learn about the importance of changing the narrative of the roofing industry.

In an episode of MetalTalk®, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat with Luke McCormack from McCormack Partners to explore the importance of discussing growth within the roofing industry. The conversation focused on the significance of shining a positive light on the sector by addressing key factors such as streamlining recruitment processes. The roofing industry faces unique challenges in attracting new talent and Luke emphasized the need for strategies to adapt recruitment methods and successfully compete for specialized talent.

Luke shared that a major obstacle in attracting talent to roofing is the industry's negative reputation. "People think roofing is dirty, outdated, dead end, no career prospects, no money to get made,” he explained. “And those people could not be further from the truth.” As a recruiter specializing in managerial and executive talent for the global roofing industry, Luke's goal is to highlight diverse career paths and dedicated individuals who contribute to the industry's success.

Shifting the narrative around roofing starts with changing how the industry is perceived by educators, parents and career counselors. As Luke put it, “I'm really passionate about shining a light on the people that make roofing so that [kids] are not clouded by these outdated negative connotations of roofing, and they actually know what roofing can do as a career for their kids or even for them professionally.” Luke has helped bring individuals into roofing through apprenticeships and has supported professionals transitioning from other trades. His focus is on raising awareness of the wide variety of careers within the industry and helping companies find specialized talent to drive growth.

Luke highlighted his passion for the industry. “The one thing that I do know is recruitment and roofing. All I want to do today is bring value to the business owners or the people in the industry who are watching this,” he shared. “I just want them to know that I'm on their side and the strategies, the tactics, the insight that I have from recruiting and roofing for the past 10 years, I want to share that with everyone because the more the industry grows, the better it is for me, the better it is for them and the better it is for the world.”
