Whether or not you live in a disaster-prone area, there is no denying that natural disasters have become more intense and more frequent in recent years. The built environment is particularly susceptible to these changing weather patterns, and if structures cannot withstand disasters, it can be life-threatening to the people within them.
In June 2023, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) came together for a three-day event in Washington D.C. The 2023 Innovative Housing Showcase brought housing industry representatives, media, policymakers and the public together to raise awareness for innovative, accessible and affordable housing design and technologies.
More than a dozen exhibitors took part in this year’s showcase. The Cypress Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit developer specializing in disaster recovery and workforce housing, showcased a solution featuring a continuous interlocking engineered metal roof system from Drexel Metals. The goal was to show a proven solution to a critical human and housing issue that would continue to meet extreme weather conditions head on. The metal roofing systems offered by Drexel Metals have a longstanding history of providing energy efficiency, exceptional performance and the highest quality material to withstand tough environments.
As metal continues to gain popularity in commercial and residential construction, it is praised for its cost savings to building and homeowners, lasting performance, superior weather resistance and unparalleled durability. This disaster-relief concept home highlights its unique application in disaster relief. Metal roofing is paving the way to providing access to affordable and resilient housing options, particularly in disaster-prone areas.
