The future of the built environment is changing with the increase in natural disasters and an emphasis on sustainable solutions. The roofing industry is strategically positioned to be a leader in this charge, and it’s no secret that metal roofing has taken off in the last few years. In a recent MetalTalk™ episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits down with industry expert Geoff Bernstein of Vicwest to focus on the strength and durability of metal roofing and siding in mitigating the risk of mother nature. Meeting new changes to the standards set by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA), Geoff talks about Vicwest’s new metal siding line, Bellara, and why contractors should start offering this sustainable siding product.
From a design perspective, where Vicwest really stands out is in their ability to offer metal siding that doesn’t look like metal. Geoff says the natural wood look is particularly popular right now. He explains, “The technology that exists right now where we’re able to print really hyper realistic wood grain graphics onto the steel. That if you’re standing an inch away from it, you think you’re going to get a splinter... And who doesn’t love the warmth of wood but doesn’t want to deal with the maintenance and the headaches that inevitably are going to come down the road.”
But beyond its design capabilities, metal siding offers a durable and sustainable solution to some of the extreme weather events that have become more prominent in our everyday lives. Geoff continues, “Steel is inherently 100% recyclable, right? At the end of its life, unlike fiber cement or unlike some other products which are going into the landfill, 100% of this can go straight into new steel... In terms of the performance testing, I mean the wind test, the water testing, the impact testing, fire testing, it’s all there.”
With a lifespan of over 40 years, you don’t even need to consider the recyclability of the material in putting up the building but can savor the fact that it’s a beautiful product that’s going to be better for the environment. Obviously, it’s not impervious to damage and wear and tear, but Vicwest stands behind their products with a best-in-class warranty so that your building looks as good in year 40 as it does on day one.
