The architectural world has seen a growing emphasis on sustainability and safety in building materials and solid plate aluminum cladding stands out as a leader in both areas. "Did you know solid aluminum products are 100% recyclable?" asks Holly Gotfredson, president and owner of American Metalcraft, beginning a compelling case for this versatile material as part of the Metal Mind Moment Education Series.
Unlike many other options, solid aluminum sheets can include up to 80% recycled content. As Holly notes, "When a building with solid metal plate cladding is decommissioned — let’s say 75 or 100 years from inception — those aluminum products can be pulled off the building and recycled instead of being sent to a landfill." This alternative offers a significant advantage for environmentally conscious builders, as aluminum can help projects earn coveted LEED points.
Sustainability, however, is just one benefit. Aluminum is also known for its impressive strength-to-weight ratio, stain resistance and weather durability. Its non-combustible nature makes it an especially appealing choice for fire safety, an increasing concern in urban planning and architectural design. Holly notes its advantage over composite materials like ACM and MCM when it comes to fire rating. She shares, "It is one of the safest cladding materials on the market."
American Metalcraft utilizes solid aluminum plate to make a variety of products including rainscreen and barrier systems, perforated panels, ornamental and brake metal, custom sunshades, column covers and custom exterior elements. Collaboration between the American Metalcraft team and architects/designers in the schematic phase, guarantees a product selection that will elevate project durability and aesthetic appeal. Holly urges designers and contractors to consult their metal manufacturers to understand the nuances between different materials and ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety regulations. Zinc and stainless-steel products are also available.
These insights reveal only the surface of what aluminum cladding can offer. To explore in-depth discussions on design strategies, the advantages of metal sustainability and real-world case studies, the full product series by American Metalcraft awaits.
