Community nominations secure veteran a new roof.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication, Dale Harmon, a Navy veteran living in Eddington, Maine, recently received a much-needed gift that has restored his faith in the power of community. Like many veterans, Dale found himself facing a challenge that seemed overwhelming. Damage to his roof had led to extensive water damage, compromising the inside of his home and ruining two of his ceilings. The situation was dire, and the financial burden was overwhelming.

Dale’s insurance coverage fell short of covering the full extent of the repairs, leaving him feeling left without viable options. The cost to repair the roof far exceeded what his insurance was willing to cover, and the thought of managing this expense was disheartening.

But Dale was not alone in his struggle. His community, recognizing his crisis and motivated by their deep respect for his service, rallied together to support him. Unbeknownst to Dale, he was nominated by compassionate community members for a project that aimed to make a significant difference in the lives of veterans facing similar challenges.

The project, known as Roofs for Heroes, is a collaborative initiative that partners with companies like GAF, Maine Veterans Project and Smith Builders Roofing. It was designed to address the gaps in support available to veterans, offering crucial aid to those who have served but find themselves in difficult situations. Through this program, Dale was granted a new roof. Their efforts exemplify the saying that “it takes a village,” demonstrating how a united community can come together to uplift one of its own in a time of need.

After hours of diligent work and a complete roof replacement, Dale Harmon stood in awe of the transformation. Harmon told News Center Maine, "I never, never would've dreamed it.” The roof that once seemed a distant dream was now a reality, thanks to the unwavering support of his community and the dedicated professionals who made it happen.
