John Chan - MCS Influencer

I started roofing in 1985 as a laborer during my summer breaks in college. After I finished school at UCLA, I went to work full time at Durable Slate in 1989, and in 1992 I became one of the partners of the company. We work exclusively with slate, clay tile and metal. We've worked on many historic and iconic buildings all over the US and even some abroad.

Some of the projects we've worked on include the Ohio Governor's Mansion, the Ohio, Maryland and Florida Statehouses, several foreign Embassies, several US Presidential homes and some of the largest private residences in the country. We've even worked abroad for the Pizet Towers and Lima Golf Club in Lima, Peru, the Red House - Trinidad's House of Parliament in Port of Spain, Trinidad and most recently in Sarajevo, Bosnia at the US Ambassador's House.

Along the way, we've garnered virtually every award in our industry, such as several NRCA Gold Circle Awards for outstanding project of the year, and also the Gold Circle Award for Outstanding Safety Solutions, several awards for North American Copper Roof of Distinction by the Copper Development Association, the IFD International Award for Project of the Year (finalists on a couple other occasions), BBB's International Award for Marketplace Ethics and many others.

I've also been a speaker/teacher/coach for: the NRCA Steep Slope team at the IFD Young Roofers Championship, University of Cincinnati's Design and Architecture Program, Tulane University's Historic Architecture Program, Clemson/University of Charleston's Historic Preservation Program, Mary Washington's Historic Preservation Class, Roger Williams University etc.

I've also been on the Board of Directors of the National Slate Association for the last 17 years, serving as President for 5 years. I'm one of the assessors for the NRCA's Slate Roofing Pro-Certification program, and I've also spoken at the NSA, SRCA, Traditional Building, International Preservation Trades Workshop, Cincinnati Preservation, Preservation Resource Center (New Orleans), Connecticut Landmarks and many other conferences/workshops.
