Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings’ latest collection showcases a fusion of artistry, functionality across three nature-inspired categories: wood, stone and metal. In an episode of MetalCast, Kiki Redhead and Brynn Wildenaur from Sherwin-Williams shared how the innovative Emulate™ architectural coatings collection empowers architects and designers to explore new creative possibilities.
The wood collection aims to inspire creativity, moving beyond conventional designs. As Brynn describes, “Our biggest motivator with the wood collection is to inspire people to think a little bit outside the box.” Starting with traditional oak and walnut, the collection also introduces a unique burl pattern crafted in-house, which allows for various applications — from rustic to upscale. The final offering, barnboard, features rich depth and a blend of warm and cool tones. The intricate rotogravure printing process enhances the multi-layered appearance of these coatings, allowing for diverse color combinations that replicate the look of genuine wood species.
The stone collection reflects a balance of aesthetics and functionality. Brynn adds, “We have different interpretations on every avenue within the stone collection.” Designed with input from various stakeholders, this collection caters to a broad audience — from high-end architects to those involved in agricultural structures. It includes options like a stunning marble with mica accents, a layered travertine, and a concrete look that captures the essence of natural materials. Each pattern showcases meticulous color balance, offering versatility and beauty for various architectural applications. Kiki notes, “[The team] worked very diligently on creating colorways that represent a mimicry of the specific type of stone that we're trying to emulate.”
The metal collection embraces creativity, drawing on trends such as biophilic design and perforated patterns. Brynn describes the process as a “really fun one that we got to work on. We got to be a little bit more creative with this one, which is great.” Among its highlights is a faux perforated leaf design that combines nature with modern aesthetics. The collection also features colorways that evoke the beauty of patina copper and hammered textures, providing depth and visual interest. Each pattern is designed to be tactile and inviting, encouraging interaction while seamlessly integrating into contemporary architectural styles.
Together, these collections exemplify Sherwin-Williams’ commitment to innovation, offering architects and designers a wealth of options to bring their visions to life.
