The rise of outdoor-centric design

Discover how barndominiums are redefining outdoor living spaces.

The roofing industry loves a good origin story, especially when it involves creativity and transformation. At The Coffee Shops, we often hear how trends and innovations reshape industries. In this episode of MetalCast™, Karen Edwards speaks to Stacee Lynn, affectionately known as "The Barndominium Lady," about how barndominiums are pushing the boundaries of modern home design — specifically when it comes to outdoor living.

Stacee’s journey into the barndominium world started as a necessity when she became the general contractor for her own home build. Today, she designs these innovative spaces nationwide through her company, The Barndominium Company. But it’s not just about the homes — it’s about how people interact with their outdoor spaces. “Porches, porches, porches — you can never have enough porches,” Stacee explains enthusiastically.

Barndominiums are designed with outdoor functionality in mind, seamlessly merging indoor and outdoor spaces. Stacee’s personal “barndo” features over 2,000 square feet of covered porches. “That’s where we spend our time, have our morning coffee and end our day. It’s our happy place,” she says. This love for outdoor living extends to her clients, many of whom opt for expansive outdoor kitchens, glass garage doors for easy access to the outdoors and pass-through kitchen windows for entertaining.

The flexibility doesn’t stop there. With careful pre-planning, adding additional porches or outdoor features later is simple. Stacee shares, referring to one of her client's projects, “She built her barndo and then when they were able to afford it, they came back and added all of these lean-to porches, but they knew where they were going to attach it, so they pre-planned inside their wall system. It was easy for them to pour the foundation for the covered porches on the lean-tos and just attach it to the metal right there.”

Stacee’s designs reflect a growing desire for homes that prioritize outdoor engagement, combining sustainability with practicality. From hosting gatherings to relaxing with family, barndominiums provide versatile solutions for those craving more connection with nature.
