The power of apprenticeship

WTI The power of apprenticeship
October 2, 2024 at 3:00 p.m.

By Jessica Bravo.

A close look at two different apprenticeship journeys that led to the same long-term career.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth speaks with two apprentices, Walter Marshall and Ian Cranmer, about their unique experiences in WTI’s Apprenticeship Program and the significance of apprenticeships for building a long-term career.

Walt Marshall, a lead service field technician for WTI, began his journey without a clear understanding of what to expect from the program. He knew that any opportunity to advance his future was worth pursuing. Currently, Walt is focused on small repairs and leak responses, having just completed his third year with WTI. He has accumulated the on-the-job hours required for the program and considers himself to have had a head start. At 35 years old, after 15 years away from schooling, he describes his experience as a significant learning curve. Walt has found that hands-on learning is the most effective approach for him and the hybrid model of online and practical training has been particularly beneficial. He notes that, initially, it was challenging to find the discipline to dedicate time to the program while managing a full-time job and life responsibilities. He says, “It’s something you have to make time for, even when you don’t want to.” Walt also highlights the importance of seeking help, saying, “I've been out of school for a long time, and I needed to ask for help.”

In contrast, Ian Cranmer’s journey through the program was somewhat different. He initially joined WTI through another program and was welcomed with open arms. Ian recalls, “They filled me in with a lot of love and support, encouraging me to step into my identity as a person and a leader.” Currently serving as a hybrid lead inspector and lead build technician, his responsibilities include managing warranty jobs and conducting annual maintenance and inspections on roofs to ensure compliance with warranties. Although Ian is in phase two of the program and has completed all coursework, he is currently waiting to accumulate the necessary on-the-job training hours to progress to phase three.

Both apprentices participate in a comprehensive line up of program courses that cover a wide range of field tasks and experience, including:

  • Online courses
  • In-person classes
  • On-the-job training

Walt and Ian both appreciate how the program integrates these components. They find that tying classroom learning to real-world applications enhances their understanding of various roofing types and products, providing valuable hands-on experience.

The key takeaway from their distinct journeys is how apprenticeships can prepare individuals for long-term careers. Anyone considering a career in roofing or construction should strongly consider WTI. Everyone involved is dedicated to helping apprentices become better at their jobs and as individuals. This program is undoubtedly an excellent opportunity for anyone looking to develop their skills and advance their career.
