The Key to Successful Training is Safety

Metalcast Nicole Pinto
March 29, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Anna Lockhart.

For contractors interested in getting into the metal industry, there are some first steps they need to take to ensure success.

On the recent episode of the MetalCast podcast, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Nicole Pinto and John Sheridan to discuss all things metal and how to break into the industry as a first-timer.

John Sheridan, owner of Sheridan Metal Resources, discusses his background in the industry and how he trained Nicole in all things metal roofing. He offers in-person training courses that highlight the key skills needed for metal roofing craftmanship and shares his knowledge on how business can excel in the metal trade. Recently, he trained Nicole on how to install a zinc roof from start to finish. Nicole now has completed her own zinc roof project thanks to his course and hopes to continue her work in roofing through her own construction company, Six Protons.

“I live on Bainbridge Island and my husband and I bought a really old farmhouse out here, and I started restoring it because of the lockdown,” Nicole explained, “I just got really into construction and even started my own business and am still working on that house. But that's how I found John. I wanted to put a zinc roof on and I wanted to do it myself, so it led me eventually to do the training with John.”

Over the course of three days, in a warehouse down in Mesa, Arizona, John and Nicole went through the steps and practice of installing a zinc roof from beginning to end. They noted the significance and importance of the first step, which should never be overlooked, “the first part of every training, is safety,” said Heidi.

Once it’s ensured that trainees understand the importance of safety equipment and have their gear set up, the training on roof installation can begin. Of course, once the three days were up, the learning and mentorship didn’t stop there. John and Nicole consistently keep in touch to share updates on projects or sharing advice on how Nicole can best proceed with her latest works.
