Day two of the International Roofing Expo (IRE) 2023 started with presentations from industry professionals, in addition to the ninth annual Roofing Alliance Student Competition. This event is truly outstanding and gives a glimpse of what’s to come from the younger generation of industry professionals.
These students have been working throughout the year to put together an estimate and proposal to reroof Globe Life Field in Dallas, Texas, also known as the Texas Rangers Baseball Stadium. Students create a project estimate, project management plan, safety plan, scheduling/manpower plans and quality control/quality assurance plans. Written proposals were submitted in December and six teams have been selected to present at the competition today.
The six finalist teams include:
While in Dallas, KPost Roofing and Waterproofing arranged a visit to Globe Life Field for the students to see the facility for themselves. This provides them with an opportunity to see for themselves the magnitude of Globe Life Field, what the weather and climate are like in Dallas and allows them to think of their proposal and determine if they would make any adjustments. A site visit like this, is just another unique element of the Student Competition that brings the roofing industry to these students and makes their project come to life.
At the Roofing Alliance event on Monday, March 6, Colorado State University was drawn as the first team to present. Not only do the students develop a realistic plan for the project, but they also create their own company, allowing these undergraduate students to think like industry professionals. Whether that’s providing access to a therapist for their crews, planning for the worst safety situations or developing their own company missions, this project provides an opportunity for the teams to get a glimpse of what it would be like to be in the industry.
The winning team is determined based on the team’s understanding of the project, realistic construction schedule, man loading and financial proposal – their written proposal and oral presentation are both considered to determine the winning team. The seven judges, who are all industry professionals, will rank the teams from highest to lowest. A maximum score of 1,600 is possible – 400 points for the written proposals and 1,400 points for the oral presentation.
The winning teams will be announced TONIGHT at the NRCA Awards Ceremony. Stay tuned!
