Stop Cyber-attacks in Their Tracks

Adams and Reese Roy Hadley Podcast
July 19, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

By Evelyn Witterholt.

Here’s how you can use cyber security to prevent your roofing business from facing a cyber-attack.

The last thing any roofing company wants to deal with is a cyber-attack. When faced with a cyber threat, companies have their own private data exposed, but also that of their customers. In a recent podcast, we spoke with Roy Hadley, special counsel at Adams and Reese, about what roofing contractors need to know when it comes to cyber security.

Roy has been with Adams and Reese for over five years now and he currently specializes in technology cases. He and his company do a lot of work with roofing companies, and they know what roofing companies need when it comes to cyber security. He says that roofing companies are right to be paranoid about cyber-attacks due to how much we rely on technology.

“Because we are so electronic, we are so dependent on our computers, and our laptops, and our tablets, and our phones, and our email, and electronic signatures, and electronic payments, all of those things are just vulnerabilities,” he says. “Those are areas that a bad actor can exploit to come at you.”

He tells us that recent advancements in AI have made it easier than ever for cyber criminals to scam businesses. Often, they will see cyber-attacks occur via email or phone calls that send fake invoices to customers who end up paying the criminals, rather than the company.

“If you get different payment information from a client or a vendor that you need to pay a sub and it's different than what it normally is, pick up the phone and call. Call them and verify that information,” he says. “It's just getting more complicated out there to make sure that we're staying safe.”
