Safeguarding roofing businesses with cybersecurity

Adams and Reese Safeguard business with cybersecurity

By Jesse Sanchez.

Why cybersecurity matters now more than ever for roofing contractors.

As roofing companies navigate an increasingly digital landscape, cybersecurity threats loom larger than ever. In this episode of the Roofing Road Trips®, hosted by Heidi J. Ellsworth, special counsel Roy Hadley from Adams and Reese LLP discusses the critical topic of cybersecurity, offering practical advice tailored to the construction industry.

The episode explores the escalating risks posed by cyberattacks, with Roy explaining that these threats are evolving at a rapid pace, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). He paints a stark picture of the current landscape, stating, "The climate out there, because we are so electronic, we are so dependent on our computers and our laptops and our tablets and our phones and our email and electronic signatures and electronic payments, all of those things are just vulnerabilities."

Roy discusses how AI, while revolutionizing business operations, is also being leveraged by bad actors to enhance their phishing and social engineering tactics. "Now with artificial intelligence, they can replicate voices," Roy warns, explaining the increasing complexity of identifying and combating these sophisticated cyber threats.

Roy offers actionable tips for roofing contractors to protect their businesses. He stresses the importance of employee training, pointing out that even the best technological defenses can be undermined by human error. "If our employees are clicking that link or if they’re doing things that they shouldn’t, it’s going to all be for nought," Roy cautions.

He also advises contractors to invest in robust password management systems and to ensure that software updates and patches are regularly installed. Additionally, Roy expresses the need for a well-thought-out incident response plan to mitigate damage in the event of a breach. "You want to have that plan and make sure that you understand what you're going to do in case something happens," he advises.
