On a recent MetalCast ™ episode, Heidi J. Ellsworth connects with Nicole Pinto, a newcomer to the construction industry and founder of her small business Six Protons, and John Sheridan, an MCS influencer and owner of Sheridan Metal Resources. The trio discuss the first steps in getting into metal and the importance of having more people involved in the trades.
Nicole started her journey into metal roofing by restoring her farmhouse. Before undertaking roof work, Nicole recognized the necessity of gaining expertise in the trade. Seeking guidance, she approached local individuals for a mentor willing to provide the necessary training. "I wanted to do metal from the beginning. It's true to the history of the house, so that was important," Nicole explained, on and I wanted to do it myself, so it led me eventually to do the training with John.”
With two decades of experience training individuals in the metal roof sector, John emphasizes how crucial it is to train beginners in the industry. Through in-person training sessions, he covers crucial skills for excelling in metal roofing craftsmanship while sharing valuable knowledge on achieving success in the metal trade.
“Once I did the training with John, I really fell in love with working with it. It's such an interesting material,” Nicole shared. When asked about why she chose metal roofing, she explained, “You really have to be creative instead of just installing and cutting.”
The learning and mentorship journey between John and Nicole extends beyond their initial connection. They consistently communicate, share project updates and offer advice on Nicole's ongoing work. John now regards Nicole as a potential mentor, with the goal of encouraging more women to join the industry.
