Formed in the 1980s, the Metal Construction Association (MCA) has consistently worked to promote the metal industry through marketing, education and advocacy. They strive to create a space for professionals in the industry to learn and grow and in turn push the entire industry forward. In this MetalTalk, Karen Edwards sat down with Lee Ann Slattery to talk about the power of MCA.
Lee Ann has been a part of the industry for over thirty years and spent the last five also working with the volunteer-run MCA. She shared a bit about her journey, “I started as the vice chair of the market development committee, moved into the chair of that committee and then for the past year and a half I have been acting as the treasurer of the association.” Lee Ann explained that her work with the MCA has been a huge aid to her industry career overall, sharing, “Being in a room with a lot of different people within the industry, you learn a lot more about how people are doing things differently and learn by sharing our knowledge and resources with each other.”
Some of the ways that MCA fosters this community and industry growth include providing members with technical resources. Lee Ann explained, “MCA has a couple people on staff being on top of codes and standards that affect our industry. For individual companies to pay for those types of resources, it would be a lot more than just paying your association dues and getting access to that.” By making these resources available to all individuals in member companies, MCA is helping the contractors on an individual level and also raising the standard of the entire industry.
