From struggle to the support of a new roof

Read about one Navy Veteran’s story of resilience in the face of a strenuous health journey.  

Texas weather can be full of harsh storms and hot temperatures. Every house needs a roof in good shape to protect their homeowners. For Deanna Tindall, her roof had been in rough shape until she was approved for a free roof replacement.  

Deanna was a member of the Honor Guard for seven years and a part of the Navy for four years. “I was injured, and I served during Desert Shield, Desert Storm, during peacetime and wartime. I was in the hospital for quite a while, and lot of physical therapy and lots of surgeries, and then I got hit by a car and COVID,” Deanna told MyHighPlains. “So, it’s like one thing led to another.” 

Smoke from recent wildfires and mold growth in her home had been difficult for Deanna’s health. Her roof had extensive leakage and water damage. She had already been struggling with her autoimmune disease, respiratory fibrosis and COPD, and the condition of her home had caused a flare up. Initially, Deanna had been receiving help to get her roof replaced. Community members tried to help her get insurance to cover the costs, but she was denied multiple times. With seemingly no options, she reached out to Owens Corning. 

Recently, Purple Heart Homes, the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project and Excel Construction partnered up to give Deanna a new roof and the help she needed. Owens Corning provided all the materials and Excel Construction provided all the time and labor to get the roof built. “This is life changing. This, I know it’s a roof and it’ll have to be replaced again someday but this is something that people did for me and that is huge. That’s insurmountable,” Deanna said to KFDA. “I have a soft heart for vets, my brothers and sisters, you know. I love it when things happen for them and things happen for me. This time, it gives me the chills.”
