In a recent episode of MetalCast™, Heidi J. Ellsworth sits with Miguel Pena and Jacque Ince from H.B. Fuller to discuss the pivotal role sustainability plays in today's construction industry, particularly in the metal sector. Their discussion highlights how metal is becoming increasingly vital in meeting modern environmental standards.
H.B. Fuller is not just a supplier of metal products. As Jacque explains, “Sustainability is a key topic and target for H.B. Fuller as a whole." The company plays a significant role in enhancing the assembly of metal panels through innovative solutions. Offering a range of products designed for metal construction, including GSSI sealants, which have been essential for installers during the initial phases of building. These tapes are primarily utilized in roofing applications and their effectiveness is crucial to ensuring longevity and sustainability in construction.
The merger of GSSI with H.B. Fuller has brought in resources and research capabilities that were previously unavailable to the smaller company. As the previous owner of GSSI, Miguel mentions, “GSSI sealants have always been on the installer side...the non-skinning tapes are used in between the panel construction usually for roofing mostly. But as a small company really, we were kind of one trick pony, that's the only product we offered.” The combined expertise allows segment leaders to identify market needs and collaborate on developing tailored solutions. This integration is particularly beneficial, as it equips H.B. Fuller to not only enhance existing products but also innovate new ones that cater specifically to the metal building sector.
A significant aspect of their sustainability efforts centers around the durability and longevity of metal roofs. In a lifecycle study conducted in collaboration with the Metal Construction Association, H.B. Fuller examined 30-year-old metal roofs across different climates. The findings revealed that the roofs showed minimal deterioration over the decades. However, the longevity of the sealants used was a crucial element in determining the lifespan of the roofs, as replacing them can be challenging. This insight emphasizes that sustainable construction relies heavily on products designed to last as long as the metal structures themselves.
Sustainability is a fundamental goal for H.B. Fuller, informing every product they develop. The company is committed to producing solutions that not only meet today’s environmental standards but also anticipate future needs. By focusing on longevity and performance, H.B. Fuller aims to minimize waste and reduce the environmental impact of metal construction.
