While many marvel at the stunning aesthetics of a pristine metal roof blanketed in snow, for metal contractors it’s never a bad idea to reup your knowledge on snow retention. That’s why in a recent MetalCast episode, host Heidi J. Ellsworth spoke with Mindy Dahlquist of TRA Snow & Sun, on the importance of snow retention for metal roofs.
Founded in 1996, TRA Snow and Sun has steadily evolved its expertise, primarily focusing on snow retention systems suitable for various roofing materials. Mindy, TRA's business development manager, plays an instrumental role in educating the public on the subject.
According to Mindy, " I think the number one reason that snow retention is going to be important is just the safety factor... But damage is also very important as well." Snow retention not only prevents potential injuries from unexpected snowfall from rooftops but also ensures a metal roof's longevity. Accumulated snow can result in considerable roof damage, bending seams, or even tearing off panels.
That same kind of engineering mindset makes up the bulk of TRA’s approach to snow retention system. Mindy said, "Engineering for us, we engineer to the main failure point of the system." This approach can aid contractors by eliminating guesswork, reducing liability, and assuring warranty support.
Communicating the necessity of snow retention to homeowners can often be a hurdle. Mindy suggests a proactive approach, using videos, examples, and emphasizing the cost of retrofitting. "Now is definitely the time to have snow retention installed instead of waiting until there's a bigger problem," she advises.
