In a recent episode of MetalCast™, Karen Edwards sits down with Neil and Lin Warner from SteelGrip SAMM® to talk about safety on metal roofs. Listen to hear why the SteelGrip SAMM is a must have on every metal roofing project and how you can add it to your safety gear toolkit.
SAMM stands for Safety Assist Magnetic Mats, and Neil invented them as a safety solution he had recognized from being in the painting industry for over 30 years. They’ve been producing these mats for the last four years and now have three different styles to choose from.
Neil tells us, “With the pole barn, which is probably your most popular type of steel and most common out there, we have a 25 x 5/8 wide mat x 21”. They come in sets of two. And they have a diamond deck rubber surface with strips of magnet attached to the bottom and a non-skid rubber coating over that. Easy to lay in place, easy to move.”
They are obviously not a substitute for your lanyard and harness, but as Neil mentions, any type of safety equipment helps in the industry. Lin adds, “One of the things we’re finding is that the people that purchase the mats are loving them because they feel more confident on the roof, and they are not as tired at the end of the day because they’re not always on guard. They’ve got a safe footing.”
Not only does the mat provide a safe area for you to stand securely on, but it also works for keeping tools in place without damaging the surface of the roof. This improves efficiency for the contractor and provides peace of mind for the homeowner that their roof will remain scratch- and dent-free.
