McElroy Comparing the Costs

By Anna Lockhart.

Many homeowners want to know the price differences between traditional asphalt shingles and metal roofing. What is the difference and why does it matter?

“What are the costs of metal and shingle roofing?” This is a commonly asked question that many contractors get from homeowners. While the question seems simple enough, there are many factors that must be considered that go into the breakdown of final costs.

The following questions should be considered:

  • In which geographical region is the property located?
  • How much do the local laborers charge for their work?
  • How complex is the home’s roof design?
  • How large will the roof need to be?

These are just the basic questions to be considered, as the specifics can go even further, which also change the costs. Certain metals cost more than others, and some shingle styles will cost more depending on the brand and materials. However, in general, the most basic answer to the question of which is less or more expensive, there is a general estimate that can be considered the answer.

On average, metal roofing can be more expensive up front than shingles. This doesn’t mean you should dismiss it as a viable option though. Metal roofing could be considered as a more economical option, as with that up-front cost, homeowners are getting a roof with a longer life expectancy and weather resistance than what asphalt shingles can provide. Add to that the factor of metal roofing aiding in lowering energy costs, and homeowners might see that the long-term value of a metal roof is a more sustainable and valuable option that ends up costing less due to its durability.

There are many factors to take into consideration about metal roofing versus asphalt shingles, and the experts at McElroy Metal are prepared with knowledgeable resources and a team of roofing professionals to help evaluate these factors and answer the question of metal versus shingle.
