Building hope while building homes

Local Vietnam veteran gifted new roof in heartwarming donation.

Michael Johnson had been wanting a new roof for a lengthy time and when he least expected it, his dream came true. After the Vietnam veteran had dedicated much of his life to his country, Schoenherr Roofing and Owens Corning replaced his roof in their efforts to give back. In collaboration, the teams worked together with Habitat for Humanity in late spring.

From 1970 to 1971, Michael was in the Air Force and stationed in North Dakota. He managed security on atomic missile sites. Then, while in Vietnam, he was placed as a tower guard. Upon returning from service, Michael got his bachelor's and master's degrees. He had an incredible work ethic, often working multiple jobs or running his own business. Michael was shocked when he received his new roof and told C&G News, “I’m still walking around in a daze. My wife and I … it’s unbelievable — nothing like this has ever happened.” This act of kindness was one of the first tangible gifts from the community Michael had experienced since returning.

Michael had applied to the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Program. This partnership was developed with the nonprofits Support Our Troops and Habitat for Humanity. They have provided over 550 home repairs for veterans in need since 2016. “He put in an application, I think, three years back and hasn’t heard anything since he put in that application. And I was actually the one to surprise him with a phone call. He thought I was just a roofing company calling to give him quotes to replace his roof, so he didn’t answer,” said Caleb Nichols, the director of finance and operations at Schoenherr Roofing. “Then he called me back, and he was just extremely ecstatic that he was going to get a free roof replacement.”

Now, Michael’s roof is restored after three years of patiently waiting. Helping veterans is one-way roofers can support their community, and these roofing companies are a significant example of ways to give back. “They’re not just veterans. They’re humans, just like anybody else. Being able to serve those who served you and your country — there’s no greater joy,” explained Caleb.
