The Alan Apartments showcase the power of Fluropon coil coating systems to give monumental and vibrant architecture the power to stand the test of time.

The talent of architects comes in many different forms. Sometimes it is important to design  the new building to match the existing ones. An example of this type of project is a historical district, where a new structure would want to blend in with the existing aesthetic of the area. However, sometimes great architectural design is also intended to stand out, such as the Alan Apartments. This project, located in Mesa, Arizona, breaks the mold of the residential area around it. This was an intentional decision by architect Tim Boyle Design, who’s vision was to step away from the common beige stucco and shift towards sharp angles and mixed materials, such as metal manufactured by PAC-CLAD and coated with Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings products.

Tim Boyle specified 12,000 square feet of Petersen Aluminum’s Reveal 12-in. panels coated in the Fluropon® color, Weathered Zinc, from Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings. He chose Fluropon for its superior durability and color retention which keeps your building facade looking new for decades to come. Available in over 50,000 colors, Fluropon’s excellent performance is a direct result of Sherwin-Williams innovative technology - a fluoropolymer resin that continually meets or exceeds the rigorous American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) performance criteria while maintaining its color and durability.

In addition to the specific color choice, Tim designed each of the 17 townhomes with metal panels that help create balcony canopies and unit dividers. What makes the use of metal panels unique is the angle they’re installed at, from the top of the second floor to the edge of the roof’s overhang. This installation tactic creates a sharp angle that transforms the flat box style into a dynamic appearance. Even though the city rejected the plans for the apartment complex five times, Tim Boyle remained adamant in his proposal, which turned into a successful project for the community.
