Best Practices for Cleaning Your Portable Rollforming Machine’s Drive Rollers

In order to create high-quality panels with your portable rollforming machine, keeping its drive rollers clean is a must.

Purchasing your portable rollforming machine is the first step in creating panels and gutters that are in excellent condition. But the next step to maintaining the quality of these panels is to keep your machinery in exceptional working condition by cleaning it frequently, specifically the drive rollers. Doing so will keep your machine in working order for a long time and you’ll continue creating quality panels with it.

For the New Tech Machinery (NTM) models of portable rollforming machines, the amount of drive rollers inside the machine can vary. Their SSQ II™ MultiPro Roof Panel Machine has eight drive rollers on the top and on the bottom. In the machine, these are divided into assemblies with two drive rollers per assembly. This means there are four top drive roll assemblies and four assemblies on the bottom.

NTM recommends you clean the drive rollers every three months unless they look dirty before then. Minimal supplies are required to clean the drive roller assemblies. All you need are clean cloth rags, mild general-purpose cleaner and Green Scotch-Brite™ pads. Never use any harsh chemicals or solvents when cleaning the drive rollers as they are made of polyurethane.

Failing to properly and regularly maintain your machine can open up a world of problems. If you try to create a gutter on the machine and it’s not clean, a ripple can appear at the bottom from foreign materials on the roller like tape or a spike. If dirt and debris are left on the drive rollers, these can show up on the panel in long streaks or smudges. By adopting a cleaning and maintenance routine, you’ll avoid running into issues like these and keep your machine in tip-top shape.

To ensure the optimal performance and longevity of your portable rollforming machine, regular cleaning of the drive rollers is essential. Best practices involve first disconnecting the machine from its power source and carefully removing any accumulated debris with a soft brush or compressed air. For more stubborn residue, a non-abrasive cleaner can be used, applied with a lint-free cloth. It's crucial to avoid harsh chemicals that might damage the rollers. After cleaning, inspect the rollers for signs of wear or damage, and lubricate them if necessary to maintain smooth operation.
