An Unexpected Surprise for an Expecting Family

CDG Unexpected Surprise
July 23, 2023 at 9:00 a.m.

By Adam Cabrera.

A young family suspected mold was growing directly above what was soon to be their new nursery.

With what looked like mold in the attic, Treese and Liz Garofalo knew that their two-story home in Lockport, New York was in need of repair.

Excess moisture due to a lack of exterior vents from the bathroom resulted in steam building up in the attic and a discoloration formed in the space above their planned nursery room. Luckily, Treese was able to confirm It wasn’t mold but it was still cause for concern.

While looking for assistance he came across Purple Heart Home, a North Carolina-based veterans organization that quickly put him in contact with the contractor Doug Mohr and his company StockMohr who was happy to do the repairs for free.

“I told them we’d take care of it,” Doug told Lockport Journal. “The only thing they should have to worry about is having the baby.”

An Owens Corning Platinum Roofing Contractor since 2008, StockMohr is committed to providing pro bono work on the homes of veterans in need of assistance and was introduced to the Garofalo family through Owen Corning’s Roof Deployment Project. Extending their gratitude to those who served, Owens Corning helped to supply the building materials used for the repair and has given new roofs to more than 425 military families since 2016.

“This is exactly who I wanted to help,” Mohr said. And, though he admits that it can be hard to find those who genuinely need assistance, he enjoys giving back to his community and knew he was doing the right thing when he first met the Garofalo's.

Treese is an Air Force veteran originally from Batavia who met his wife Liz while in high school. After graduating he joined the military and worked on planes in Italy, Qatar and Florida. He’s now studying computer science at Niagara County Community College and is an active member of the reserves.

The couple are expecting in July!
