Barndominiums — metal-based residential structures with barn-like aesthetics — are gaining momentum across the U.S. as flexible, sustainable alternatives to conventional homes. In this episode of MetalCast™, host Karen Edwards visits with Stacee Lynn, known as "The Barndominium Lady," who discusses her journey from a general contractor to a pioneering barndominium designer and her enthusiasm for the growth of this industry.
“I’m always talking about metal buildings because I think steel is sexy,” Stacee states. Her company, The Barndominium Company™, specializes in designing customized barndominiums, mostly for residential purposes but also for commercial clients. With steel structures that rely on perimeter support, barndominiums eliminate load-bearing interior walls, offering homeowners unique adaptability during construction. “In a barndo, the entire weight of the roof structure is carried on the perimeter,” Stacee explains, giving homeowners the flexibility to modify their layout mid-build without complex engineering adjustments.
Initially a regional favorite in Texas, barndominiums saw a surge in demand during the COVID-19 pandemic as families sought larger, flexible living spaces away from crowded cities. Stacee notes, “COVID really pushed forward the idea of barndominiums... People who had the means and wherewithal said, ‘I want to move my family out because I don’t know what’s going to happen with COVID.’” With generous porch space and adaptable interior designs, barndominiums became ideal for those craving more outdoor space and a sustainable lifestyle.
Barndominiums, built primarily from steel, boast numerous advantages beyond flexibility. They’re energy-efficient and resilient to common issues such as fire and pests. “Metal is strong. It's going to outlast you and I by decades,” says Stacee. As Stacee's story unfolds, it’s clear that barndominiums offer more than just a trend — they provide a forward-thinking lifestyle with durability and customization at its core.
