Experts discuss the importance of customized snow retention systems for roof safety and how to implement safety plans.

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Lars Walberg of Rocky Mountain Snow Guards and Nick Piontek of On Point Contracting to talk about snow retention solutions. Snow retention systems are designed to prevent snow and ice from sliding off the roofs of homes and buildings, which can cause both property damage and bodily injury.

Ensuring a roof is properly equipped to handle the challenges of winter weather is essential for safety. Lars Walberg explained, “There are many more slippery roofing products being installed on roofs these days. Things have changed a lot...so snow retention over the years has gotten more and more important. The snow builds up and builds up and then it all comes off in one fell swoop in an avalanche and those avalanches are heavy and damaging and can actually be deadly.”

After experiencing the first snow avalanche of the season, homeowners are often ready to begin the process of protecting their property and loved ones. In collaboration, On Point Contracting works with Rocky Mountain Snow Guards to create customized snow retention plans for these concerned homeowners. Nick shared, “Rocky Mountain Snow Guards has a great free program of creating these architectural snow retention plans, we send them the engineering specs or satellite measurements of the roof and they're able to put together a detailed plan for us. They take into consideration the snow loads for the region, type of roof, pitch, roofing materials, size of each facet and other factors. They send us a detailed quantities and installation instructions and diagrams.” Once the plan is ready, contractors simply follow the provided instructions for installation.

Nick added, “The clients love that there's a lot of coordination that's going on between the supplier of the materials and the contractor as well. A lot of the homeowners feel very confident in moving forward with us because of the support that we get from Rocky Mountain Snow Guards.” This collaboration not only strengthens the relationship between the contractor and the client, but it also reassures homeowners that the snow retention system being installed is specifically designed to protect against snow-related damage for the winter seasons to come.
